“Vanilla Planifolia”

Did you know that each vanilla bean comes from an orchid that has been pollinated by hand? Once the vanilla seed pod has developed, it must be hand picked as well. After picking, the curing process takes several months. So if you’ve ever wondered why vanilla extract, and especially vanilla beans, can be so expensive, this is why.


Ruby Jewels the Chub


Who says vanilla has to be boring?
French, Danish or Madagascar,
Ruby jewels the chub.
But… taste them all
And, don’t forget the Mukilteo Mud.
They’re all so delicious… it’s almost debilitating.

Shades of white, mousse-like texture,
creamy and luscious with good mouth feel,
the naked coconut is my favorite.

Even with a poof of whipped cream,
you can’t hide anything in vanilla.

lemon frozen yogurt between vanilla cookies
pure divine indulgence.

Grab a cart and explore…
Who would ever know,
from one little planifolia
so many flavors grow.

So… now I feel a bit of a story coming on. Technically, this is a journal after all and not officially a poetry blog. I promise to be brief. A dear friend and I discovered this market just a few weeks ago. Mind you, it had been in the neighborhood for a couple of years but, being the boring lady of habit that I can be, I hadn’t explored the PCC.

What a discovery was “in store” for us! Riches galore, leaving all our senses in overdrive as we made our way up, down, around and through all the aisles awaiting us. To say that our eyes were bigger than the tummy is no exaggeration…. as we came home with enough taste treats to last us from Monday to Sunday and then some.

So, when it came to the challenge of this week’s prompt on We Write Poems…
Supermarket Found Poetry back I went for inspiration and my “found” poem was easy to find. I never got out of the dairy section where labels, along with customer and staff requests and observations, were food for thought and poetry.

And, since I’m ‘journaling’ and on a roll… so to speak… Here’s a quick recipe to share!


Homemade Vanilla

(extract that is)

“Easy to make and much cheaper. As you use it, top it off with more vodka.”

Prep Time: 5 min.
Ready In: 20 Days 20 Hrs


1 (750 milliliter) bottle vodka
2 vanilla beans

1.Submerge vanilla beans in vodka and store in a cool, dark place for several weeks, shaking occasionally.

Great fun this week in more ways than one and the “proof” awaits me in my freezer! Aw gee whiz! You figure it out!
